Carbon Fiber Surface Finish: A Sourcing Checklist

Use this checklist to communicate appearance, weave and branding expectations more clearly.

Surface appearance is an important part of many carbon fiber products. Descriptions such as “gloss carbon” may not be sufficient by themselves, so visual references and written expectations should be supplied together.

Weave Appearance

State whether a particular visible weave or visual direction is preferred. If appearance must match another component, provide clear photos or a physical reference where possible.

Gloss or Matte

Explain the intended finish and where the part will be used. A reference image helps align expectations, but the approved sample should remain the final visual reference.

Color and Branding

Identify any tint, painted area, logo, decal or label requirement. Supply artwork in an appropriate file format and confirm placement during sample review.

Inspection Expectations

Define which areas are cosmetic surfaces and which variations are unacceptable. Quality criteria should be agreed before production planning.

Finish feasibility can depend on product geometry, laminate construction, tooling and process, so it should be confirmed for the specific project.

Discuss Your Requirement

General guidance is a starting point. Product-specific feasibility, specifications and commercial terms require an individual review.
